Ok, so I figured out what was going on with the light, having looked at the other 8 shots I took. First, it's not all a light issue. What look like shadows in the sand, are not shadows at all. They are grooves cut by the wind. I have 21MB originals, so I can see that detail. The light is odd also because their is a mix of direct and back lighting. The backlighting is a product of the bright white cloud behind the signs. Sunlight was behind me.

Part of the reason I took this photo is that the light seemed to be coming from everywhere. Very wild.
